Standing Committee
Types and Duties
- The Standing Committees shall examine bills and petitions that fall under their respective jurisdictions and perform other duties as prescribed by relevant laws. There are 17 standing committees.

House Steering Committee
- Matters regarding the operation of parliament, the National Assembly Act, and National Assembly Rules
- Matters under the jurisdiction of affiliated parliamentary organizations, Presidential Secretary’s Office, Office of National Security, Presidential Security Service, and National Human Rights Commission of Korea
Legislation and Judiciary Committee
- Matters under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Justice, Ministry of Government Legislation, Board of Audit and Inspection, and Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials
- Matters relating to the affairs of the Constitutional Court, Judicial administration of courts and military courts, and impeachment proceedings
- Matters relating to examination of the structure, form and wording of each legislative bill for an Act or Regulation of the National Assembly
National Policy Committee
- Matters under the jurisdiction of the Office for Government Policy Coordination, Prime Minister’s Secretariat, Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs, Fair Trade Commission, Financial Services Commission, and Anti-Corruption and Civil Rights Commission
Strategy and Finance Committee
- Matters under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Economy and Finance and the Bank of Korea
Education Committee
- Matters under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Education
Science, ICT, Broadcasting and Communications Committee
- Matters under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Science and ICT, Korea Communications Commission, and Nuclear Safety and Security Commission
Foreign Affairs and Unification Committee
- Matters under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Unification
- Matters regarding the affairs of the Peaceful Unification Advisory Council
National Defense Committee
- Matters under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of National Defense
Public Administration and Security Committee
- Matters under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Interior and Safety and the Ministry of Personnel Management
- Matters regarding the affairs of the National Election Commission and local governments
Culture, Sports and Tourism Committee
- Matters under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism
Agriculture, Food, Rural Affairs, Oceans and Fisheries Committee

Trade, Industry, Energy, SMEs and Startups Committee

Health and Welfare Committee
- Matters under the Jurisdiction of the Ministry of Health and Welfare and the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety
Environment and Labor Committee
- Matters under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Environment and the Ministry of Employment and Labor
Land, Infrastructure and Transport Committee
- Matters under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport
Intelligence Committee
- Matters under the jurisdiction of the National Intelligence Service
Gender Equality and Family Committee
- Matters under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family
Appointment and Selection of Member
- The Speaker shall appoint or select members of a standing committee at the request of the members representing each parliamentary group, in proportion to the number of parliamentarians in the parliamentary group.
- Those who do not belong to any parliamentary group shall be appointed by the Speaker.
Sub-Committee
- Committees may have sub-committees to examine certain matters.
- Each standing committee (except the Intelligence Committee) may appoint three standing sub-committees to assume responsibility for examining specific matters under its jurisdiction.
Chairperson
- The chairperson of each Standing Committee shall represent the Standing Committee, regulate its proceedings, maintain order, and supervise its affairs.
- The chairperson shall be elected by the National Assembly by secret ballot, with the attendance of a majority of all registered members, by the largest number of votes among members present.
- The terms of the chairperson shall be two years.
- The chairperson shall resign from his/her office upon the consent of the plenary session while the parliament is in session. If the National Assembly is not in session, he/she may resign with the approval of the Speaker.
Vice Chairperson
- Each Committee shall have a vice chairperson from each parliamentary group to replace the Chairperson if he/she is unable to perform his/her duties.
