National Assembly holds the 34th Korea-U.S.-Japan Trilateral Legislative

Exchange Program (TLEP) via video conference

- International situations and circumstances of each country discussed during a Nov. 16 video conference

- Attended by National Assembly members Lee Jae-jung of the Democratic Party of Korea, the delegation head; and

Choi Hyung-du of the People Power Party

The National Assembly of the Republic of Korea (Speaker: Kim Jin-pyo) held the 34th Korea-U.S.-Japan Trilateral Legislative Exchange Program (TLEP) on November 16 via video conference.

The Korean delegation included National Assembly members Lee Jae-jung, the delegation head, (Democratic Party of Korea) and Choi Hyung-du (People Power Party). The United States was represented by Congressman Mark Takano, and Japan by Congresswomen Kunico Inoguchi and Kaname Tajima.

The meeting was organized to discuss the rapidly changing international situations and circumstances of each country, as well as to foster more robust trilateral parliamentary cooperation. It follows the two annual meetings held earlier this year, in February (Seoul, Republic of Korea) and May (Washington D.C., USA).

Delegations from the three countries shared ▲ perspectives on the political situations in their respective countries; ▲ discussions on the necessity of trilateral cooperation on international situations and issues, such as peace, economic collaboration, and humanitarianism in Northeast Asia and the Middle East; and ▲views on future development of the three-way cooperative framework, including expanding the scale of the Korea-U.S.-Japan Trilateral Legislative Exchange Program (TLEP).

The Korea-U.S.-Japan TLEP has been held regularly twice per year since its founding in 2003. The meetings’ discussions and outcomes are kept confidential to encourage open sharing of opinions among legislators from the three countries. The Republic of Korea’s National Assembly plans to continue hosting and participating in TLEP to enhance cooperation between the three nations with a view to responding effectively to regional challenges.
