National Assembly Speaker of the Republic of Korea Kim Jin-pyo attended the Assembly’s 2024 New Year Kick-off Ceremony on Jan. 2, where he expressed gratitude for the efforts of the National Assembly Secretariat and affiliated agencies’ staff over the past year. He urged all Assembly members and staff to do their best to carry out the policies and legislative tasks necessary for political reform and the country’s future, while welcoming the newly appointed Secretary General of the National Assembly Baek Jae-hyun.

 

In his address, the Speaker stated that a critical moment is approaching for Korea to address its demographic crisis amidst the need to survive fierce global competition for technological hegemony and preserve peace and security in an unstable global environment. He expressed hope that “At this critical moment, the National Assembly Secretariat and all other affiliated agencies will exert their best efforts with the firm resolve to break old patterns.”

 

Kim repeatedly expressed hopes that every National Assembly organization and institution will unite as one team with pride and a sense of mission to strengthen their skills and capabilities. “Especially regarding significant issues such as the low birth rate and policy direction, the National Assembly must step forward with a sense of authority and mission,” he underlined. 

 

In addition, the Speaker mentioned new legislation on constitutional amendment procedures, improvements to the confirmation hearing system, strengthening deliberation on budget bills and accounts settlement, and committee reshuffles. He also urged careful preparation for parliamentary reform tasks that must be concluded during the 21st National Assembly, in hopes of helping the new 22nd National Assembly operate more efficiently. 

 

After wrapping up his New Year's address, Speaker Kim awarded Presidential Orders and Medals of Merit as well as a Speaker of the National Assembly Commendation to exemplary staff who achieved outstanding performance over the past year.
